The 2018 fall semester was very memorable for us. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, I’ve seen great collaboration between our SMU Catholic staff and Board of Trustees to grow and strengthen our faith community. We kicked off the semester with our annual Back-to-School BBQ and Mass of the Holy Spirit with Bishop Greg Kelly. For fall break, we journeyed to Mexico City with our students, staff, and Bishop Burns for mission work among some of the poorest populations. In October, we also hosted our 11th Mustang Awakening Retreat. These are just a few of the many highlights from this semester.
As you may know, Perkins Chapel underwent renovations this fall semester. SMU Cox’s Executive Education Center was very hospitable to allow us to celebrate Mass in their building on campus every Sunday.
Our time of excitement this fall was marred by tremendous challenges facing the Catholic Church. We acknowledge as evil these sins perpetrated by some who are supposed to protect children and vulnerable adults. We also acknowledge the emotions we feel, and affirm that they are right and just. But even now in our bewilderment, we must emerge with a sense of urgency and a renewed vision for the future. As we seek systemic changes within the Church, we also must make a personal commitment to a life of grace and holiness.
To that end, let us continue to pray for the healing of all those hurt by the Church. Let us continue to pray for one another that we may be courageous in living out our Christian faith.
Finally, thank you for your generous and steadfast support. Without you, our students, community members, friends, and parents, SMU Catholic could not operate. We do not receive substantial support from the Diocese or SMU. As most of you know, SMU Catholic Campus Ministry is self-funded, and all gifts in their entirety solely support our students and programs. We ask for your strong financial support to meet the needs of our students and ministry.
